Although the Liptov is a small area as for the acreage, it boasts a wide palette of various natural beauties. The same applies to the area of the Low Tatra Mountains, where the new development VIA JASNA is situated.
The Low Tatra Mountains are the second most visited mountains in Slovakia after the High Tatra Mountains. They are a part of the largest protected area in Slovakia – The National Park of Low Tatras (NAPANT). The mountain range is spreading between picturesque valleys of the rivers Vah and Hron at the length of 80 km, in the East-West direction. Three peaks of the main comb reach the elevation of 2000 m (Dumbier – 2 043 m, Chopok – 2 024 m, Derese 2 004 m) and offer the breathtaking view of the Slovak mountains and valleys.
The Demanovska Valley is the most famous and beautiful valley of the Low Tatra Mountains. It is 15 km long and is a main tourist centre of the area. There is a lot of hiking opportunities. A large number of marked tourist trails cross the valley. Moreover, there are plenty of walking paths for those who are not keen on hiking. Skiers can enjoy skiing in one of the most famous ski resorts in Slovakia – Jasna. The underground network of caves in the Demanovska Valley is another allurement for tourists, of which the Demanovska Ice Cave and Demanovska Cave of Liberty are open to public.
The Demanovska Ice Cave is one of the first known caves in the world
(first time mentioned in written documents in the 13th century). The cave is
1 750 m long and comprises the longest parts of the underground network of
caves in Demanovska Valley. Glaciating of the cave was facilitated by
vertical character of its entrance and exit parts with surface openings in
its highest places. In winter, colder air penetrates through mountain
openings into the cave and descends to the lowest space. Water that leaks
out through calcites freezes down and creates ice stalactites, stalagmites
and split-level ice on the bottom. What is interesting, there is a finding
place of bones of various vertebrates including the cave bear (Ursus
spelaeus), which were in the first half of the 18th century considered
dragons’ bones. Nowadays 650 m is open to public, which are spreading at
four underground floors. |
The Demanovska Cave belongs to top ten caves in Europe. It is the largest and most beautiful of 30 caves of the large cave network in Demanovska Valley. From the total length of 8 400 m 2 000 m are made public. Various kinds of colour stalactites, a 6 m high flowstone waterfall, a 40 m deep abyss, and also an underground stream Demanovka are to be found in here. Alongside with white flowstone fills you can find here yellow, pink, red, and purple colour stalactites; somewhere the grey, dark green and black colour is appearing. All this forms of stalactites and stalagmites are growing, are alive and of high gloss that is a rarity in other caves. Therefore the Demanovska Cave of Liberty attracts both domestic and foreign visitors.
For those who prefer open-air activities (water sports and fishing), we recommend the water reservoir Liptovská Mara (area 27 km2, max. depth 43 m). The dam was given a name after one of 13 flooded villages. In 1975 the whole village was awashed by the waters from the water reservoir. It was just a Gothic Church, more precisely, its ruins, remained above the water surface in the locality “Havranok” (“Rook”). The most valuable parts were transported into the area of the next open-air museum in Pribylina and to the edge of the village of Svaty Kriz (an articular wooden church from the flooded village of Paludza – the biggest cross-like wooden church in Europe).
Nowadays, the Liptovska Mara offers wide opportunities for water sports (boats, water bikes, surfs, scooters etc.), bathing, golf, and the newest extreme sports.
